Dominican University’s Department of Education Title V grant, “Strengthening Advising, Teacher Education and our H.S.I. Identity,” is a five-year development project that began October 2017. The $2.75 million grant will support activities designed to strengthen the institution’s undergraduate capacities in the three named parts of the project: advising, teacher education and H.S.I. (Hispanic Serving Institution) identity. All three parts will be implemented simultaneously to achieve our main objectives: increase Hispanic student retention, persistence and timely graduation, increase the number of Hispanic students in teacher education, and advance our identity as a Hispanic-serving institution such that, in order to facilitate student success, more responsive policies and procedures are implemented throughout the campus. Over the five years we will continuously assess the impact of all activities and collaborate with their ultimate institutional home in order to create sustainable infrastructures and resources for the university.

In part one, Strengthening Advising恰红院.在线观看-可乐操-色999日韩自偷自拍在线-日本一区二区三区视频, the grant will support the new division of Student Success and Engagement (SSE) as it implements its new structure and redefines the ways in which student support systems interact with each other to better serve student needs. Title V funds will be used to hire a bilingual/bicultural retention coach, support the purchase and use of updated student data systems for better advising and four-year planning, plus equip and develop “El Centro,” a resource space for peer advising, training and mentorship, as well as for student leadership enhancement. The Title V project will work towards strengthening advising by supporting the implementation of an initiative started in collaboration with the AAC&U, “Promising Pathways.” Currently being piloted in the freshman seminar, it helps students discover resources relevant to their needs, learn about high-impact practices and create a four-year plan to graduation. Students are better able to see when to include their required academic courses, their leadership and personal development, as well as their career planning. Additionally, Title V will support the redesign of our summer Transitions program to be a two-week residential experience that supports our most academically vulnerable students and helps prepare them to be successful at Dominican University and beyond.

In part two, Strengthening Teacher Education, the Title V grant is charged with increasing the number of Hispanic students who complete their degrees in Teacher Education. We will help more students gain admittance to the program by providing ACT/SAT exam prep services, and institutionalizing this assistance for future candidates who fall short of the minimum scores for admission. Title V will also support the development of a program to support students in taking other standardized content exams required for State of Illinois Teacher Certification. To attract and maintain more Hispanic students in teacher education, the Title V project will support a redesign of the ESL/Bilingual endorsement program so that it better serves the needs of its undergraduate students. Finally, the Title V grant will also sponsor a one-week workshop, Rising Star Teachers, for high school juniors and seniors considering teaching as a career.

Lastly, Title V will establish an institutional language access infrastructure to ensure that families with limited English proficiency have adequate access to necessary information to help their students remain in college, and making timely progress to degree completion.
